They don’t call it The Kingdom for a nothing…
This absolutely breath-taking ocean-surrounded Sneem home is absolutely perfect for those keen for a more private life on the sea coast.
And sure, if you’re living at Mermaid Isle – why would you ever want to leave anyway?
(And yes, it’s really called that.)
Situated by the warm crystal clear water of the Gulf Stream in a protected inlet of the Kenmare Bay, the beautiful main house and the cottage lie sheltered between Mermaid Isle’s peninsula mainland and Illaundrane, the island just off the shore.
The location boasts more than 1,200m / 4,000ft of private shoreline with access to the crystal clear water for swimming, bathing, snorkeling and all other sorts of watersports activities.
And now, for the best bit – Dolphins and seals patrol the front of the house and bask on the rocks in the bay. The island is also home to many different kind of seabirds, otters and many other animals.
The main house, completed in 2001, has been constructed with posts and wooden beams (Californian Douglas Firs), curved braces, curved medieval style stuck frames and hand carved oak pegs creating a barn style house with wide open spaces and vaulted ceilings. The house is accessed through huge arched double doors leading to the light filled, open plan atrium tiled with Chinese slate.
The kitchen offers all modern appliances including a large stainless steel gas cooker, Bosch dishwasher, American style fridge as well as stainless steel and marble top counters.
A large antique pitch pine table forms the centre of the kitchen area. The west wing (yes, the WEST WING) comprises a sunroom currently used as workshop / studio. The guest cottage, hidden in the woodlands, also boasts stunning views and is a renovated fisherman’s cottage with exposed stone walls.
Both houses have been designed with the intention to maximise the views and natural light and keeping close to nature. Large floor to ceiling windows and French doors in nearly every room give access to the surrounding nature and make the rooms all airy and bright.
The east wing is home to a library sitting area as well as the master bedroom with en-suite. The bedroom contains walk-in wardrobes hidden behind sliding doors while the master en-suite boasts a tub and a double shower. On the other side of the first floor is a large open plan area currently used as a studio and workspace. The third floor is home to another bedroom and can be reached via a wooden staircase in the library.
And finally, yes we can confirm that you will indeed see friendly sea creatures every day.
The wild and sea life is literally always present with dolphins playing in the sheltered inlets, curious seals basking in the sun, otters swimming in the sea always ready for a fresh catch and all kinds of seabirds nesting in the woodlands and the islands and inlets of Kenmare Bay. Mermaid Isle is a retreat for creative people and nature lovers and also a fine retreat for them busy in everyday’s life and seeking for a place to spark the imagination, reopen your senses and recover from today’s busy lifestyle.
