Two new weather warnings issued to all but three counties for Saturday

James Fenton

The weather warnings have come thick and fast all week and Met Éireann has this afternoon dropped a couple more that will take us into Saturday.

Depending on where you are in the country, you’ll have seen swirling winds, driving snow or rain showers, or a combination of all three, at some point or another today. It seems like the inclement weather will continue for another few days at least after Met Éireann issued two new status yellow weather warnings – one for rainfall and the other for snow/ice.

The rainfall warning covers Cork, Kerry and Waterford and will be valid from 12.01am until 12pm on Saturday and says: ’30 to 40 mm of rainfall with strong to gale force onshore southeast winds. River and coastal flooding risk.’

Meanwhile, the whole of Leinster and Connacht, as well as Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal, will be under a status yellow snow/ice warning from 12.01 until 12pm on Saturday, which says: “Snow accumulations of 5 cm possible (more on higher ground), accompanied by fresh to strong southeast winds.”

Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone, Derry will also be under a snow/ice warning for the whole of Saturday, which says: ‘Snow is likely to spread east during Saturday with some accumulations in places and icy stretches. Potential for disruption to travel.’

Given how many of these warnings have landed this week, these are unlikely to be the last. You can follow Met Éireann’s updates via this link.
