“2021 is the year of recovery” – Varadkar gives positive update on holidays, matches and events

An Tanáiste Leo Varadkar has described 2021 as the “year of recovery”, saying that he hopes “holidays, matches, events” will be back with some degree of normality next year.

Speaking on a Zoom meeting with Laois Chamber of Commerce members, Leo Varadkar expressed hope that events like Electric Picnic will go ahead in 2021. With news being announced today that the UK has authorised the rollout of a Covid-19 vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech, a similar decision for the population of Ireland is expected to be made in January.

The positive updates in recent weeks have led to a renewed sense of hope and Varadkar was very much on board with this yesterday. An Tánaiste is quoted in Laois Today as saying: “The scene is set for a rapid economic recovery in 2021”. He added that “hopefully Electric Picnic will happen in 2021 and a lot of people will be making it to Stradbally. Hopefully by the middle of 2021 we will be back to a level of normality in terms of going on holidays, matches, events.” Varadkar went on to say that “2021 will be the year of recovery”.

Many businesses across Ireland, particularly those in the hospitality trade, have not opened since March when coronavirus restrictions were first introduced. This week has seen a return to Level 3 restrictions after six weeks of Level 5. Current measures will be reviewed in January.
