Shell’s shared this mesmerising video of basking sharks swimming off the edge of the shore at Keem Bay in Achill. Known as Gaelige as ‘liabhán chor gréine’; these massive sharks have made Keem Bay their summer home in recent years, and have been regularly spotted in the shallows.

Basking sharks are listed as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Although these guys can grow up to up to 15 meters (or 45 feet), they are plankton dwellers and are have little to no interest in humans. We urge our readers to be mindful if you see a basking shark, enjoy their incredible beauty – but do not disturb these gentle giants.
