The 12 Twists Of Christmas: This Refreshing Vodka-Based Cocktail Is Unreal And Super Easy To Make

Éadaoin Fitzmaurice

Let’s be honest, when it comes to pre-drinks we can be pretty lazy.

It’s so easy to grab any old bottle of vodka and mixer but it can almost be difficult to drink, never mind enjoy it.

Terrible stuff.

Now that I’m all old and sophisticated (hmph!) I understand how much better it is to buy good quality alcohol and mixer – no sick tummy the next day!

Most of all, it’s actually so tasty.

It can be hard though to feel inspired to make something different, and to stray away from your usual mix.

Well, I’m here to fix that and to make you fall in love with homemade cocktails all over again. Stay in and get comfy, have your pals over and have a cocktail evening.

Welcome to The 12 Twists Of Christmas With Schweppes!

A wonderful cocktail series that will relight your fire!

Each week we’ll be letting you in on the tastiest cocktail mixes around that are easily made at home. No fancy frills, just great taste.

This week’s cocktail is Cucumber Red.

An elegant floral and citrusy drink made from Grey Goose Vodka and mixed with Schweppes 1783 Quenching Cucumber Tonic Water, ginger and grapefruit.

This is a cocktail that’s bursting with flavour. You’ve got your bittersweet flavours from the grapefruit and a fiery spice from the ginger. It’s so simple to make but the flavours really are amazing.

Grey Goose Vodka is my spirit of choice for this one. It’s one of the most popular vodkas around, and with good reason. Some vodkas can burn when you sip them, this one is smooth to drink.

Its got a wonderfully crisp taste, touched with a hint of burnt charcoal and an aniseed flavour. It leaves no after taste, just a lovely after-glow of that sophistication we talked about earlier.

Created in Cognac in the Western region of France, it uses the finest French wheat, natural spring water filtered through champagne limestone and a five step distillation process.

You’ll find it in the Celtic Whiskey Shop, O’Briens Wine, Dunnes Stores, L. Mulligan Whiskey Shop, Tesco, Wine Wells and in restaurants across the country.

Here’s how to make this refreshing cocktail:

Ingredients

• 50ml Grey Goose Vodka

• 200ml Schweppes 1783 Quenching Cucumber Tonic Water

Garnish: pink grapefruit and fresh root ginger

Having a drink like this would make you wonder how you ever drank vodka and soda with no ice all those nights out in college.

It’s simple but effective and wonderfully delicious.

Method

Fill a highball glass to the top with ice. Add the Grey Goose Vodka and mix with Schweppes 1783 Quenching Cucumber Tonic Water.

To garnish: peel the skin of a pink grapefruit, taper and twist inside the drink, add a slice of fresh root ginger.

Who says you have to leave the house to avail of a top-class cocktail?

You can drink this one in your pjs with a big bowl of snacks by your side and let’s be honest, that’s the real win.

Don’t forget to drink responsibly!

Share your snaps with us if you’ve created the cocktail at home.
