If you’ve never been to Achill Island, you’re seriously missing out.

The island is a rugged little diamond that boasts everything from seafood to surfing, and the locals are almost as friendly as the sheep.

Here are five reasons you need to put it on your bucket list…

1. It’s gorgeous

In terms of scenery, you’ll find a bit of everything in Achill, from sandy beaches to towering cliffs.

It’s wild, wind-beaten and totally stunning.

2. The craic is ninety

Achill has loads of cosy pubs where you can sip a Guinness or hot whiskey and have the chats.

It’s easy to find live trad music too if you’re in the mood for some jigs and reels.

3. It’s not too hard to get there

Achill is isolated enough to be peaceful and unspoilt, but not so off the beaten track that it’s impossible to get there.

Drive, fly into Knock Airport or get a train to Westport or Castlebar before hopping on a bus.

The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge so there’s no need to worry about seasickness!

5. There are loads of things to do

Achill is full of ancient buildings and has a really interesting past.

Grace O’Malley’s castle and the Deserted Village are two attractions that are well worth a visit.

If you’re planning a trip to Achill Island, why not go during the Smithwick’s 10° West, the alternative NYE Festival?

For those looking to escape the typical New Year’s Eve celebration in the big city, there’ll be incredible daytime outdoor activities that lead into a night full of live music, good vibes and great tastes.
