Wake Up To… The Best Places In France To Experience Authentic French Cuisine

Brian Dillon

When visiting France, you are guaranteed one thing: delicious, interesting and authentic French cuisine, which is arguably some of the best in the world. A trip to France really is a foodie’s dream.

And with the Aer Lingus Sale, it’s an ideal time to get planning your French foodie experience. With cheap flights to Paris, Bordeaux and Toulouse, it’s never been easier to live out your French fantasy.

And when you’re there, it can be hard to know where to go to experience the very best of what each region has to offer. So, here’s where we recommend heading when on your French vacation to enjoy the tastiest, most authentic French food that you will not forget.

1. Au Pied de Cochon, Paris

If you’re looking to try truly authentic Parisian cuisine, then look no further than Au Pied de Cochon in the 2nd arrondissement, where you can enjoy dishes such as French onion soup, Périgord-style stuffed pig’s trotter, and seafood dishes. And of course, creme brulee for dessert.

2. Les Petits Crus, Toulouse

No trip to France is complete without eating an abundance of cheese and drinking some fabulous wine. And you’ll find both of these at Les Petits Crus in Toulouse in France’s southern Occitanie region.

With their carefully put together wine and cheese plates, you’re sure to get the best, most authentic experience here. How it works: you choose the ‘theme’, and the waiter will bring you a cheese plate and a bottle of wine that have been specially chosen to perfectly complement each other.

They also have an assortment of tapas, so you’re sure to find something you like.

3. Café Du Port, Bordeaux

Set on the picturesque banks of the Garonne River, Café Du Port gives you some gorgeous views of bridge le Pont Saint Pierre and Saint Michael’s 16th-century spire.

And while the views are beautiful, it’s the authentic cuisine that’s going to make you love this place. Expect duck confit, Pavé of lean and loads of other French goodness.

4. Restaurant Allard, Paris

Located in the sixth arrondissement, Restaurant Allard is a taste of old-school Paris, having served the same classic dishes for the past 84 years. Because they serve up truly authentic Parisian food, expect Navarin-style lamb, Challans duck with olives, garlic frog legs, french cheeses and escargot in herb butter.

Restaurant Allard really is as French as it gets.

5. Michel Sarran, Toulouse

This spot is not only authentically French, but it’s also super chic and screams finesse, yet it is warm and welcoming at the same time.
Treat yourself to some insanely delicious appetisers, main courses and desserts as well as the chef’s amazing selection of wine that will perfectly complement your meal.

6. Bouillon Chartier in Paris

Great quality, authentic French cuisine at a reasonable price. That’s what you’ll find at Bouillon Chartier in the 9th arrondissement of Paris.

Being over 100 years old, the site was actually officially named a historic landmark in 1989.

In the grand dining room, you can enjoy typical French dishes such as duck confit with potatoes, steak with green pepper sauce and French fries and grilled lamb chop with French fries.

7. La Tupina, Bordeaux

La Tupina is probably one of the most popular restaurants in Bordeaux, and for good reason. Now, it can be fairly pricey, but when you try some of their French classics like their duck or their lamb dishes, you’ll be glad you came.

Plus, while you’re splashing out, you may as well treat yourself to a dessert such as their canelé cake (a custardy cake filled with homemade ice cream and topped with salted caramel).
