SPAR is celebrating its 60th birthday – and you better believe we’re all invited.

From stocking your everyday essentials to having the tastiest treats in store, to always being on hand with a warm chicken fillet roll, it’s really no exaggeration to say that SPAR has always been there for us.

In fact, they’ve been there for us for well over half a century. Believe it or not, this year marks SPAR’s 60th anniversary. The first ever SPAR contract was signed in Dublin’s Shelbourne Hotel in 1963, and the convenience store has been a staple throughout Irish communities ever since. This summer, they’re celebrating their 60th birthday in style with a one-of-a-kind experience in the heart of Dublin’s city centre.

The folks at SPAR have teamed up with local award-winning retailer Thomas Ennis Group to celebrate all things SPAR with a pop-up shop at Johnson Place in Dublin 2.

The pop-up SPAR has been impressively built in just two weeks, and as well as being eco-conscious – the fridges, tills, and service areas had been previously used in other SPARs – it features a replica of the original 1963 SPAR Sign over the door. The nostalgia will be through the roof.

What to expect in store

SPAR Johnson Place is fully decked out in 1960s decor and pop-art. The walls feature a collage of imagery, documenting key cultural moments from the local area during this period, and there is also a decorative collection of vinyls, with the option to scan a QR to listen to the ultimate 60s playlist.

You can also expect all your favourite SPAR goodies in store, as well as some exciting new additions. You can head on over to the Insomnia Coffee station, which hosts two regular coffee machines, one oat milk coffee machine and an iced coffee station.

The tea-lovers among us can indulge in a cuppa courtesy of the Local Tea Company, who will be on hand with all your favourite brews. And, for eco-conscious shoppers, there is a plastic bottle recycling facility in the store so customers can pop in and dispose responsibly when they’re in the area.

SPAR Johnson Place will also stock all your favourite groceries, including budget-friendly SPAR own brand products, baked goods, healthy ready meals and the fabulous ‘Food Craft’ range of gourmet sandwiches, snack pots and wraps all made in-house, ideal to grab-and-go en route for a sunny lunch in nearby St Stephen’s Green.

Make sure you don’t miss out, and check out the SPAR pop-up for yourself.
