Visiting Arranmore island? Don’t leave without a stop off at this seafood spot

Fiona Frawley

You can’t beat Donegal for a staycay.

Dips in the tidal pool in Bundoran, hikes up Slieve League and unspoiled sandy beaches at every corner – it’s easy to see why it’s so high up on everyone’s agenda for a weekend getaway.

A trip to Arranmore Island is a must to tick off the bucket list while you’re in Donegal, and if you find yourself feeling a bit peckish after a day of cliff walks, sea swims and rock climbing, be sure to hit up The Only Plaice for a feed.

You’ll find this yellow bus parked up by the beach on Arranmore Island, and one look at the menu will have you as eager as I am to book the ferry over. All their fish is freshly caught from the seas of Arranmore and Donegal and they’ve got everything from old faithful fish and chips or chowder to fresh fish tacos and monkfish curry.

If you’re not a fish lover they’ve also got you covered with chicken burgers, salads and gourmet sausage rolls.

Access to Arranmore Island is via ferry, and you’ll find info about timetables and booking your place here. A boat trip, fresh fish and chips and maybe a pint or two from Earlys to finish up? Sure where else would you be going.
