7 Brilliant European Christmas Markets Worth A Quick Visit This Year

niallharbison

Despite many years of trying we just haven’t cracked the whole Christmas market thing here in Ireland. We’ve had some small attempts but they never take off with the same gusto as they do across Europe.

So if they won’t come to us we’ll have to go to them.

You’ll quickly be able to pick up cheap flights and make a weekend out of some of these destinations. Nothing better to get you into that festive mood…

1. Prague

One of the most picturesque cities in Europe and one that attracts millions of tourists year round but which really comes into it’s own at Christmas time. The streets are lined with stalls and there is a huge focus on food which will warm you up as you buy all those amazing gifts to take home. Some amazing nightlife will help you unwind after all that tough shopping out in the cold.

2. Dresden

The Striezelmarkt as it is known is packed around the square and streets leading to it. Dresden wouldn’t be top of many lists when traveling to Germany but they make a huge effort for the festive season and you’ll have a wonderful time shopping here while eating German food washed down with warm wine and beer.

3. Vienna

If ever somewhere in the world felt like Christmas then this is it. The markets make the city feel even more festive and with over 20 of them to choose from in various shapes and sizes you are never going to be short of shopping opportunities.

4. Berlin

Suffered a horrendous terrorist attack so more important than ever to go out and support the very idea of a Christmas market. Amazing array of stalls and plenty of great German food, warm wine and beer to keep you feeling good as you shop.

5. Brussels

Very central and affordable for people around Europe to travel to. They have 2km of markets with over 250 stalls selling food, gifts and drinks to warm you up. A city perfectly set up for Christmas with lots to see around the central area as well as the markets. Make sure to sample the amazing local beers.

6. Copenhagen

One of the best cities to travel to at the moment. The fact that they are massively into design, beautiful products and quality of living means you’ll come back with gifts for yourself and others that people actually want. The big win here are the amazing food and drink stalls that help compliment the experience.

7. Tallinn

The town centre is listed as UNESCO and generally just feels like Christmas should. The chances are you’ll see snow at some stage and being all wrapped up, drinking warm wine and shopping the stalls will make you feel super festive. The fact that you money goes a lot further here is also a huge bonus.
