A Cork man in his 80s has been hailed a hero after bravely fighting off three armed robbers attempting to rob his local bookmaker.

Denis O’Connor, 83, was in Bar One Racing in Glanmire, Cork over the weekend when three men came in armed with a shotgun and hammers.

In a video which has since gone viral, the great-grandfather can be seen calmly facing down the three men and tackling them along with shop manager Tim Murphy.

Even when a shotgun was pointed in his face, Denis remained calm and between the two of them, managed to chase the armed men out of the shop.

Speaking to The Sun, Denis said, “You can either run and hide or take a stand and I took a stand. The two with the hammers had jumped in and were threatening Tim, the manager, and I decided to go and help him.”

Gardaí are still investigating the incident and have released an appeal for information.

They said, “We are appealing for any information or witness sightings of the three male suspects in the Riverstown, Glanmire area between 6pm and 7pm on Saturday and any mobile phone or dash-cam footage from the Riverstown/Glanmire/Sallybrook area at the same time.”

“We are also appealing for any witness sightings of suspicious activity by a black saloon vehicle, either an Audi A4 or VW Passat, in the Riverstown/Glanmire/Sallybrook area at the same time.”
