I’m on a major health buzz at the moment and as half the battle with getting in to shape is what you eat I’ve been spending a lot of time trying to improve my diet. That involves cutting out carbs and really ramping up the amount of protein I am eating. I don’t know much about food science myself but enough smart fuckers over the years have told me that protein is better for you than carbs especially when you are working out and trying to bulk up and replenish burnt out muscles. For those of you who don’t know protein is stuff like fish, chicken, beans and the likes. It doesn’t taste that bad but it really doesn’t fucking fill you up that much! Carbs on the other hand do but they are bad!! With that in mind here is a great little recipe for protein balls. They are stuffed full of protein, are great for making in advance and snacking on and they’ll actually fill you up! Lash a load of them together in advance and snack on them until your heart is content.

Instructions

Step 1

So you don’t need to be exact with the measurements here. Put in roughly what you see in the picture but every packet of dates is going to vary in moisture and it is better to just play around with the recipe. Its a couple of teaspoons of cinnamon and the rest of that powder is coco.

Step 2

Get your mixture going and lash in all the really dry ingredients starting with the almonds.

Step 3

Fuck in the sunflower seeds.

Step 4

Next goes the flax seeds and then you are ready to grind all the bastards up.

Step 5

Then you want to lash in the coconut. This will give it a really good flavour. Also fuck in the other dry ingredients…coco and the cinnamon.

Step 6

Some dates are wetter and more moist than others. Lash a good few in if they feel dry.

Step 7

Fuck in your peanut butter making sure to scrape it all away from the edges. This is going to help to bind the mixture together.

Step 8

Cut your vanilla pod in half and scarpe all the seeds out. You could easily use vanilla extract if you didn’t have any fresh.

Step 9

At this stage your mixture should be getting nice and wet and starting to come together in to more of a paste.

Step 10

Add in the honey. You want to keep adding the honey or peanut butter until the mixture comes together. It should feel like play dough and not be dry and flakey. You should be able to roll it in to nice little balls or shapes. Don’t be scared to add more wet ingredients if too dry or more coconut if too wet. You’ll get used to it yourself over time and know what works.

Step 11

Roll the mixture into little balls or whatever shape you want (biscuits, squares etc) and put them in the fridge for an hour. There is no need to cook them at all and you can start eating them for a snack straight away!

So as the title says they may not look like the most appetising thing that you have ever eaten in your life and actually resemble something you might find in a toilet but they are actually very delicious. A couple of these do an amazing job of filling you up and unlike early every other snack you are actually doing a good thing for your diet by eating them and have nothing to feel guilty about. Lash these together, store them in the fridge and come along and grab one next time you are starving after that big work out!
