Someone has added a new accessory to the Derry Girls mural and it’s a real sign of the times

Sarah Finnan

The Derry Girls are sporting a new accessory.

Painted by Derry-based street artists UV Arts, the famous mural has gotten an upgrade with the artists adding one very important accessory – a face mask.

Painted on the side of a building in Derry, the mural first appeared back in January of last year and it’s gone down a treat ever since. Sharing a snap of the mural in progress when it first went up, Nicola Coughlan, who plays Clare Devlin, wrote: “Derry is painting us like one of their French girls, so surreal”.

Even more surreal? The updated version that sees the famous five donning protective face masks.

Posting a photo of the finished product on their Instagram, UV Arts captioned it:

“The Derry Girls and the wee English fella are doing their bit to stay safe and stay at home during this madness.

Uppa NHS and a massive thank you to all our volunteers, keyworkers, carers and anyone else doing their bit!

Stay safe – stay at home.”

It looks like Jamie Lee O’Donnell, who plays the hilariously inappropriate Michelle Mallon, approves of the Derry Girls mural too as she reposted the photo to her own feed with the hashtag ‘stay home’.

A constant source of entertainment, the Derry Girls have long been providing light-hearted comic relief with Erin and Orla even recording a very important message from isolation.  No better women to get us through a pandemic.
