Galway’s own Eimear Noone made history on Sunday night when she became the first woman to conduct the orchestra at the Oscars.
Eimear Noone, from Kilconnell, led the orchestra at the Academy Awards as excerpts from the five nominated scores were performed for all of Hollywood’s elite and millions watching at home.
Noone, who is best known for her award-winning work in composing music for video games, was proudly introduced by Brie Larson, Gal Gadot and Sigourney Weaver.
Eimear’s name didn’t exactly roll off the tongue of Weaver but slight mispronunciation aside, it marked a momentous moment in Oscars history.

The nerves clearly didn’t get to Eimear as she put on an incredible performance that proved that it’s been long overdue for a woman to lead the orchestra at the Oscars.
Speaking to Variety before the ceremony, the Galway woman admitted that she felt out of her comfort zone rubbing elbows with the most famous faces from the silver screen.
She said: “I can’t wait to get to the music part. The red carpet is terrifying.”

Fair play to her for doing Ireland proud on the world stage, while cementing herself in the history books in the process.
