Three Billboards Have Appeared In Connemara In Honour Of BAFTA-Winning Martin McDonagh

James Fenton

Drama flick/black comedy Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri has been sweeping almost every prize going this awards season so it’s only right that writer Martin McDonagh is getting plenty of kudos.

The film has already won Best Screenplay at the Golden Globes and can now add the BAFTA Awards for Best Film and Outstanding British film to its list of accolades. Stars Frances McDonald and Sam Rockwell have also received various nods for their performances in the movie.

As for McDonagh himself, he was nominated for best director at the Golden Globes and nabbed a Best Original Screenplay BAFTA as well. Besides all the glitz and glamour, the London-born writer has now been honoured in his father’s home town of Leitir Mealláin in Connemara.

In a reference to the main plot of the movie, three billboards have appeared outside the town acknowledging McDonagh’s rise to fame. This snap was posted by Twitter user Róisín Nic Leoid and the signs read ‘Comhghairdeas Martin McDonagh. Réalt Mór Leitir Mealláin. Réalt Mór Hollywood.’

The signs translate to ‘Congratulations Martin McDonagh. Big star of Leitir Mealláin. Big star of Hollywood’. Hopefully McDonagh spots the kind gesture before the Oscars on March 4 when he’s bound to pick up a few more gongs.
