This Riveting Irish Documentary Is What You’re Watching Tonight

James Fenton

It’s a case that continues to mystify the Gardai and the public alike to this day.

From June 12 to June 16 2009, a mysterious man going by the alias ‘Peter Bergmann’ stayed in the Sligo City Hotel. He was said to have spoken in a Germanic accent.

He checked in under an address in Vienna, Austria which, upon police investigation, was discovered to be a vacant lot.

On June 16 the mysterious man’s naked body was found on a beach at 6.45am. His clothes were scattered along the shore, with no wallet, money or form of identification.

CCTV footage taken throughout his stay in Sligo saw him leave various belongings around different parts of the town and the circumstances surrounding his death remain a mystery.

Five months after his death, Bergmann’s body was buried at a funeral attended by four Gardai and no one else.

The Last Days Of Peter Bergmann is told through interviews of people who met the man, and that CCTV footage.

Directed by Ciaran Cassidy and funded by the Irish Film Board, it looks well worth a watch and can be viewed below:
