RTÉ’s decision to screen Oprah Winfrey’s interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry appears to have paid off, with 750,000 viewers tuning in last night.
The national broadcaster was criticised in some quarters for airing the interview but it seems the decision was justified, with an average audience over two hours of 725,000 tuning in. This is compared with the 398,000 who watched the opening episode of RTÉ’s new Sunday night drama Smother the previous evening. 53.5% of those watching TV in Ireland last night were watching Meghan and Harry’s interview, while more than 100,000 watched on RTÉ Player. The figures were confirmed by RTÉ Managing Director Jon Williams.
