Bob Odenkirk talks about his favourite movies to watch on a Friday night in

Rory Cashin

The star of Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad has a new action movie in Irish cinemas this week.

Everyone has their Ultimate Friday Night Movie. That movie that you know you can watch over and over and over again, and will absolutely put you in a great mood, every time.

New action movie Nobody will likely be added to this particular list for many people, and I had the opportunity to chat to the movie’s star Bob Odenkirk ahead of the movie’s release, and the conversation turned to his own favourite Friday night movies.

These were his picks:

“I would say Hard Boiled. I like watching, I’ve watched Police Story by Jackie Chan a number of times. Probably my favourite action film is Police Story. Zelig. I know it is not popular to reference Woody Allen these days, but it is a great, funny movie, Zelig. And Animal House, do you know it? It is a great movie. It is brilliant and funny and awesome.”

I also chatted to his co-star Connie Nielsen (Wonder Woman), and she also told me her picks:

“I love old movies as well. And so with my kids, I have kids of all ages, we kind of go through all of the classics. I’m a big Criterion Collection kind of person as well, so I watch them too. But I’m also a member of the Academy so I’m trying to literally catch all of the movies that are out right now on the Academy app. So I’m just watching, watching, watching movies ever night, so for me every night is a Friday night movie right now.”

And the movie’s director Ilya Naishuller (Hardcore Henry) also revealed his picks:

“I think the first one that was on replay throughout the summer of 1999 or 2000 was The Matrix. That was something special. I was 15 and we literally watched it every weekend, twice, Saturdays and Sundays. I think nowadays, the ones that I keep coming back to and rewatching, are mostly comedies. This is something that is feel good and pick-me-ups. I think I’ve seen Anchorman and Hot Fuzz at this point around 20 times each.

“And I wish I had more courage to look for things I haven’t seen before and expand my possible horizons of film watching. But nope! Sometimes I’m like ‘Alright, it is Edgar Wright time’, and that is it. I could do The Cornetto Trilogy in one go and it makes me happy.”

Nobody is released in Irish cinemas on Wednesday, 9 June.
