Brian O’Driscoll had some words of encouragement for one young fan who worried that glasses would dash his sporting dreams.

Asking the Twittersphere for help, Siobhan Tinnelly tweeted to see if anyone knew of any Irish sports stars who wore glasses as children. All to reassure her friend’s young son that wearing glasses will not hinder his future dreams of becoming a professional sports star.

“A little boy I know thinks his sporting dreams are over as he needs to wear glasses.”

Tagging the GAA and Irish Rugby in the tweet, it managed to catch the attention of several sporting big wigs, including none other than Mr Brian O’Driscoll himself who had some words of encouragement for young Fionn.

Replying to Siobhan in the comments, he wrote:

“I used to have to put my hand out for all buses that passed on my route cos I could never see whether it was the number 30 or not until it was about 5 yards away! Cue irate drivers for stopping them. Maybe the gaps on the pitch weren’t as big as I thought but I managed…”

You could say that that’s a bit of an understatement, BOD. Many others also reached out in the comments – pro rugby player Devin Toner and tennis star Martina Navratilova amongst them who both said that glasses never impacted their sporting careers.

Safe to say young Fionn’s concerns have been more than reassured.
