There Has Been Nearly 100,000 Petitions To Have This Irish Movie Banned

A short-film written and directed by an Irishman is coming under serious fire and could be facing a ban.

Detainment by Vincent Lambe follows the story of toddler James Bulger but more so the police interviews that were carried out with his killers, 10-year-olds Robert Thompson and Jon Venables.

It has made the Oscars shortlist under the ‘Live Action Shorts’ Category but calls had been made by Bulgers’ family to have the film removed from the list.

And now, a petition is being signed online to have the movie banned entirely.

Bulgers’ mother, Denise Fergus has backed the petition and asked for support to bring through a new law that bans films being made without the consent of the murder victim’s family, which is what happened in the case of Detainment.

The petition has got 81,000 signatures in just a matter of days so far.

Writing on Twitter, Denise Fergus said:

“Let’s hope this helps to stop this film and others like it in the future, not just for me but for all victims of crime families.

“There needs to be a change to make sure the victim’s families are thought about first and foremost.”

The film has already won ‘Best Short Film’ at the Young Director Award and the Grand Prix at the Odense film festival in Denmark.
