Lenny Abrahamson has shared behind the scenes footage of the Normal People GAA scenes that featured Paul Mescal’s character becoming a local sporting hero.
Normal People director Lenny Abrahamson, who is appearing on RTE’s Home School Hub this week, has taken to Twitter share some never before seen footage from the hit show. The clip shows the difficulties Lenny had with Connell (Paul Mescal)’s opposing goalkeeper being far too good at his job and stopping shots that were supposed to be going in.
Abrahamson captioned the footage with the words ‘Pssst – some rushes from Normal People showing the 2 saves the goalie made (first one pretty spectacular) before the take where Connell scores. As some speculated, I may have had a quiet word with him in advance of the final, used take …. Very fine keeper, tho.’

After getting some light-hearted ribbing from high-profile viewers, in recent weeks, the goalkeeper in question has since responded. Adam O’Connor wrote: ‘So done a bitta filming for Normal People last summer, Hopefully Dara Ó Briain and Malachy Clerkin are content with these clips now. Cheers Lenny Abrahamson for the proof!’
