Michael D. Higgins was the first surprise guest on the Tommy Tiernan Show last night

James Fenton

President Michael D Higgins was the first guest on last night’s Tommy Tiernan Show, drawing huge applause when he emerged on stage to greet the comedian.

If you’re not aware, the premise of The Tommy Tiernan Show is that the host has no prior knowledge of who he is going to interview so he must have got some shock when MC Fred Cooke announced that the Michael D Higgins himself was the first guest.

The interview started with Higgins recalling a solemn recent visit to Auschwitz which led to him speaking about how society as a whole should be doing more for minorities.

As the interview progressed, it became apparent that Tiernan and Higgins enjoy a warm friendship and the latter’s status as President didn’t discourage Tommy from throwing in a few of his trademark cheeky one-liners.

Tiernan’s talents as an interviewer meant that viewers saw a different side to Higgins that is usually kept under wraps due to the formal restrictions of the Presidency. Last night, his personality was very much on view as himself and the comedian exchanged the craic and a mischievous streak in Higgins was very much on show.

If you happened to miss Michael D Higgins on The Tommy Tiernan Show last night, you can catch a snippet of the interview in the clip below. It will also be available on the RTE Player here.
