Oscar winner Olivia Colman heading to west of Ireland for new feel-good Irish drama

Rory Cashin

The star of The Crown, Fleabag, and The Favourite will be here in early 2021.

Olivia Colman is amazing.

That’s it. That’s our entire assessment of Olivia Colman.

Yes, she’s won the Best Actress Oscar for her leading role in The Favourite (another Irish movie, by the way!), but we’ve also known her and loved her for her roles in the likes of The Crown, Fleabag, Broadchurch, Hot Fuzz, The Lobster, Peep Show, Murder On The Orient Express, and loads and loads more.

She is one of those actresses that can easily flip from gut-bursting comedy to tear-inducing drama with such ease and precision, and she’ll soon be bringing those unique skills to the west of Ireland for the new feel-good drama Joyride.

Set to be helmed by Irish director Emer Reynolds (who previously brought us brilliant space documentary The Farthest, and upcoming Phil Lynott documentary Songs For While I’m Away) and written by Ailbhe Keoghan (who wrote the underseen Irish gem Run & Jump), according to Deadline, the new movie will see “Colman play Joy, a train-wreck on an adventure who is ready to give away her new-born baby. Joined by a cheeky street urchin, they are two diamonds in the rough on the run.”

Emer Reynolds had this to say about getting Colman on board the project:

“We’re thrilled to have the wonderful Olivia Colman, an artist of such incredible talent, intelligence and depth – not to mention comedic brilliance. It’s going to be a pleasure harnessing her rawness and her comedy and, vitally, the profound bravery that is visible in all her work.”

The movie is set to begin filming along the Wild Atlantic Way in 2021, so locals should be sure to keep an eye out for one of the most talented actresses in the game!
