Reeling In The Years looked back on Marriage Equality last night and viewers were emotional

We all remember that special moment: When Ireland officially said ‘yes’ to Marriage Equality.

Reeling In The Years has become somewhat of a ritual for the past few Sundays. With the newest season looking back on the 2010s, many of the events highlighted seem like they only happened yesterday. Last night’s episode looked back at 2015, which was a historical year in many regards. The one event that likely comes to mind for many is the passing of Marriage Equality and Ireland becoming the first country in the world to pass same-sex marriage by popular vote.

It’s likely that we all remember where we were when it was officially announced that Ireland had voted in favour of Marriage Equality. Many were in Dublin Castle and thousands, if not millions around the country watched on screens as the official results were announced. For a lot of us, it was a truly magical moment.

Last night’s Reeling In The Years looked back on this moment that was important for so many, showing cheering crowds and the most colourful celebrations. And the fine people of Irish Twitter have been sharing their own memories of the day. One Twitter user wrote, “One of the best days of my life. That morning @hat_dogg asked me to marry her. This was the moment I knew it could actually happen.”

Another said, “Ireland being the first country in the world to pass Equal Marriage by popular vote is hands down this country’s finest moment in my lifetime.”

Another person wrote, “Overwhelmed watching #ReelingInTheYears and remembering the #MarRef in 2015. It was one of the most emotional times in my life and for so many other LGBTQ+ people. I remember going to Dublin Castle for the results. And the atmosphere in the air was so electric. It was beautiful.”

The 2015 episode was emotional for many other reasons, as it looked back on some of the tragedies people suffered in that year, such as the Carrickmines fire, the Berkeley balcony collapse, the November 2015 Paris attacks and the refugee crisis.

One Twitter user said, “Burst into tears when I saw that image of poor little Alun. We failed him and so many others who needed refuge #ReelingInTheYears.”
