RTÉ to screen The Commitments and The Snapper this month to mark new Barrytown series

James Fenton

They’re three of Ireland’s favourite movies and they’re all going to be celebrated this month in a three-part series called Back to Barrytown.

Back to Barrytown will be a celebration of the fictional Dublin suburb that was the setting Roddy Doyle’s famous Barrytown trilogy, made up of The Commitments, The Snapper and The Van.

The show will be led by Colm Meaney, arguably the most recognisable actor from the movies, as he takes a trip down memory lane with co-stars and the real life people who inspired the movies.

As well as that, RTÉ One will also screen The Commitments on Saturday, May 22 after the Eurovision Song Contest Final and The Snapper on Saturday, May 29 at 9:30pm. That’s two weeks worth of Saturday night viewing sorted!

Back to Barrytown begins on Sunday, May 16 on RTÉ One.
