The Irish Embassy in Washington has been educating Americans on ‘happy Corkman’ Roy Keane

James Fenton

Roy Keane turned 49 yesterday and there was bound to have been plenty of celebrations in the happy-go-lucky Corkman’s home to mark the occasion.

Well, maybe not quite. Roy Keane has built a reputation on not getting too excited about things that would be cause for celebration for a lot of other people. Thinking about it, taking one step closer to 50 may not have had the former Manchester United captain cartwheeling out of bed if we’re honest.

Still, Roy has been known to enjoy a joke, with his dry sense of humour often referred to by former teammates and fans of his punditry work alike. Perhaps sensing this, the Irish Embassy in Washington took part in some light-hearted ribbing at his expense on the occasion of his birthday. Sharing the FAI’s happy birthday message, which included a picture of a, shall we say, less than pleased Keano, the Embassy told followers: ‘For our American friends, this is what a happy Corkman looks like.’

If that’s a happy Corkman, we won’t like to see him when he’s upset. One commenter seemed to back up the stereotype, posting ‘Married to a Corkman and can confirm this is what they look like when they are happy, sad, asleep, awake, hungry,’ while another quipped: ‘As his fellow Corkman, I can confirm you misspelled ecstatic.’

At least the next time Roy takes a holiday Stateside, people might understand that this is pretty much as big a smile as you’re going to get from him. Never change, Roy.
