The Late Late Valentine’s special will feature two musical blasts from the past

James Fenton

The Late Late Valentine’s special takes place this Friday and Ryan Tubridy has confirmed that two blasts from the past will be performing live during the show.

The host of RTE’s flagship Friday night chat show appeared on Today with Maura and Daithi to reveal what’s in store for this year’s Late Late Valentine’s special and it appears it’s going to be filled with 90s nostalgia.

Tubridy told viewers that “it will be Valentine’s hormone fest on Friday night with apologies to everyone. It’s full of messing and we will have live music from Marti Pellow and Chesney Hawkes. Just a little music memory to add to the cheese board that is the Late Late Show Valentines Special on Friday night.”

Chesney Hawkes is of course mostly famous for his 1991 international mega-hit The One And Only while Pellow achieved huge success as the lead singer of Wet Wet Wet throughout the 80s and 90s.

Perhaps their most recognisable tune is 1994’s Love Is All Around which featured on the soundtrack to rom-com Four Weddings and a Funeral. Go on, indulge yourself…

The Late Late Valentine’s special airs annually and with Valentine’s being on a Friday this year, it will actually take place on the night of February 14.

It’s known for the audience being slightly more raucous than usual with Ryan saying “it’s a show that brings out the wild in people, and that’s what we want!”

If you don’t happen to be heading out with your other half on Friday night, you can catch Chesney, Marti and all the rest on the Late Late Valentine’s special at 9.35pm on RTE One.
