The “sex cult” documentary everyone is talking about is now available to watch in Ireland

Rory Cashin

The HBO documentary series has been the talk of the town in Hollywood.

God, we love a good scandalous documentary, don’t we?

Remember back at the start of lockdown, fourteen years ago eight months ago, which seemed to be timed right around the release of Tiger King, and it was all any of us could talk about?

Well, it appears that time has come again, with the release of The Vow, which doesn’t quite reach the same level of “Is this really happening?” moments as  Tiger King (which, to be fair, would be tough for literally any documentary), but is still filled with some jaw-dropping, frankly horrifying moments.

So, what is it all about?

You may or may not have heard of NXIVM, an organisation that kind of began as a self-help group, under the eye of its reportedly genius creator Keith Rainere. The documentary kicks off with a large group of people explaining how and why they came to be a part of this group, and not just entry-level members, but actual teachers of the NXIVM lessons themselves, dedicating more of their day-to-day life to this group than their actual careers.

However, while members do claim that NXIVM and its many subsidiaries have helped with their self-growth and development, it is revealed that the leaders of the group have been charged with sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy.

The documentary series talks to several former members who disclose stories of devastating emotional and physical abuse, as well as focusing on a rich, powerful mother who is unable to retrieve her daughter from the group.

The documentary has a score of 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, but only 57% audience score, which truly is an indication of something that has been causing a lot of discussion and arguments.

All nine episodes of The Vow are available to watch on NOW TV right now.
