These are the best movies on TV this weekend

No less than FIFTEEN must-watch movies are on the telly this Saturday and Sunday.

We’ve scoured the TV schedule for the weekend to dig out the very best movies for you to watch on both Saturday and Sunday evening.

SATURDAY

Assassins – ITV4 – 9pm

Professional hit-man Robert Rath (Sylvester Stallone) wants to fulfil a few more contracts before retiring but unscrupulous ambitious newcomer hit-man Miguel Bain (Antonio Banderas) keeps killing Rath’s targets.

War for the Planet of the Apes – Channel 4 – 9pm

After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar (Andy Serkis) wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind.

The 40-Year-Old Virgin – Comedy Central – 9pm

Goaded by his buddies, a nerdy guy (Steve Carrell) who’s never “done the deed” only finds the pressure mounting when he meets a single mother (Catherine Keener).

Minority Report – Sky One – 9pm

In a future where a special police unit is able to arrest murderers before they commit their crimes, an officer (Tom Cruise) from that unit is himself accused of a future murder.

The Ritual – FilmFour – 10.55pm

A group of old college friends reunite for a trip to a forest in Sweden, Eastern Europe, but encounter a menacing presence there stalking them.

Crimson Tide – ITV4 – 11.45pm

On a U.S. nuclear missile sub, a young First Officer (Denzel Washington) stages a mutiny to prevent his trigger happy Captain (Gene Hackman) from launching his missiles before confirming his orders to do so.

Knocked Up – TG4 – 11.45pm

For fun-loving party animal Ben Stone (Seth Rogen), the last thing he ever expected was for his one-night stand (Katherine Heigl0 to show up on his doorstep eight weeks later to tell him she’s pregnant with his child.

War of the Worlds – BBC One – 11.55pm

Steven Spielberg’s updated version of H.G Wells’ seminal sci-fi classic about an alien invasion threatening the future of humanity. The catastrophic nightmare is depicted through the eyes of one American family fighting for survival.

The Descent – FilmFour – 12.45am

A caving expedition goes horribly wrong, as the explorers become trapped and ultimately pursued by a strange breed of predators.

SUNDAY

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle – 6.45pm

Four teenagers are sucked into a magical video game, and the only way they can escape is to work together to finish the game. Stars The Rock, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Karen Gillan.

Galaxy Quest – ITV4 – 6.50pm

The alumni cast (Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman) of a space opera television series have to play their roles as the real thing when an alien race needs their help. However, they also have to defend both Earth and the alien race from a reptilian warlord.

The Big Short – RTE Two – 9pm

In 2006-2007 a group of investors bet against the US mortgage market. In their research they discover how flawed and corrupt the market is. Stars Brad Pitt, Steve Carrell, Ryan Gosling, and Christian Bale.

Michael Collins – RTE One – 9.35pm

Neil Jordan’s historical biopic of Irish revolutionary Michael Collins (Liam Neeson), the man who led a guerrilla war against the UK, helped negotiate the creation of the Irish Free State, and led the National Army during the Irish Civil War.

I Love You, Man – Comedy Central – 10.55pm

Friendless Peter Klaven (Paul Rudd) goes on a series of man-dates to find a Best Man for his wedding. But, when his insta-bond with his new B.F.F. (Jason Segel) puts a strain on his relationship with his fiancée (Rashida Jones), can the trio learn to live happily ever after?

Heat – FilmFour – 11.25pm

A group of professional bank robbers (headed by Robert De Niro) start to feel the heat from police (headed by Al Pacino) when they unknowingly leave a clue at their latest heist.
