These are the seven best movies on TV tonight

Rory Cashin

Action, comedies, murder-mysteries and fantastic Irish actors are all on the TV movie menu tonight.

Wednesday night. Hump Day. What to do?

Not a lot, I’m afraid. We recommend a movie or two. Especially considering how cold out it is going to be.

Goldfinger – ITV4 – 6.45pm

When people discuss The Best Bond Movie Ever, this is usually the one they’re talking about. Connery at his most swaggery, hooking up with Pussy Galore, and trying to stop a villain from destroying all of the gold at Fort Knox.

The Italian Job – FilmFour – 6.55pm

The Michael Caine original, not the Mark Wahlberg remake. He plays a criminal just released from prison, who heads to Italy to carry out a heist that his friends couldn’t finish.

Van Wilder: Party Liaison – Comedy Central – 9pm

Ryan Reynolds is the ultimate party animal in his college, until his Dad suddenly cuts off his tuition fees, and he is forced to graduate as soon as possible, which is tough for a guy who has never studied a day in his life.

Murder on the Orient Express – FilmFour – 9pm

The Kenneth Branagh-directed (and starring) remake, which features Johnny Depp as a murder victim, and an entire train full of famous suspects (Daisy Ridley, Michelle Pfeiffer, Judi Dench, Penelope Cruz, Josh Gad, Willem Dafoe, loads more) stuck in a snowstorm, accusing each other of the crime.

Blade – TCM – 9pm

Wesley Snipes first outing as the half-human, half-vampire, vampire-hunter is still a brilliantly violent action-horror, and quite unlike any other comic book movie out there before, or since.

Die Hard 2 – ITV4 – 10pm

“How could the same shit happen to the same guy twice?” Well, because the first movie made a lot of money, that is how! Little did John McClane know that this would happen three more times. Arguably the second-worst of the five Die Hard movies, it is still a lot of explosive fun.

Trespass Against Us – FilmFour – 11.15pm

Michael Fassbender plays a man attempting to escape the criminal ways of his outlaw family, especially his vicious father (Brendan Gleeson), before his own young son is brought into the fold.
