The nominations for the 90th Academy Awards have just been revealed and the Irish are faring pretty damn well.
Saoirse Ronan has received a nomination for Best Actress for her role in Lady Bird, Martin McDonagh's Three Billboards Outside Ebbing has two nominations and Daniel Day Lewis has been nominated for Best Actor in Phantom Thread.
Not only that, but a very special animated film that was made by Kilkenny-based Cartoon Saloon and directed by Nora Twomey has made it in the running for Best Animated Feature.
The Breadwinner was based on the best-selling novel by Deborah Ellis and also features Angelina Jolie as an executive producer.
Here's what The Breadwinner is all about:
Parvana is an 11-year-old girl who lives under Taliban rule in Afghanistan in 2001.
After the wrongful arrest of her father, Parvana cuts off her hair and dresses like a boy to support her family. Working alongside a friend, she soon discovers a new world of freedom and danger.
Drawing strength from the fantastical stories she invents, Parvana embarks on an epic quest to find her father and reunite her family...
Director Nora Twomey said that:
"I am absolutely thrilled that the Academy has nominated THE BREADWINNER for Best Animated Feature. At a time when women’s voices are coming to the forefront, the story of a young girl using her voice for what she believes in is more relevant than ever."
Here's hoping it gets that Oscar!
