This Week’s Gogglebox Brought Some Of The Maddest Irish Traditions To A Whole New Generation

James Fenton

If you’re too young to remember when Irish TV used to finish up for the night with the national anthem and A Prayer At Bedtime then this week’s episode of Gogglebox would have filled you right in. Wait a minute… A Prayer At Bedtime? Podge And Rodge? A Scare At Bedtime? Literally just got that!

The show was an 80s and 90s special as older participants reminisced and younger ones gawked in amazement at some of the old Irish TV traditions such as the nation gathering for a bit of an aul pray before hitting the leaba.

As well as that, classic Irish moments from the era were put in the spotlight such as the iconic first Riverdance performance, the even more iconic Boyzone Late Late Show debut and, astonishingly since it was as recent as 1994, Housewife Of The Year hosted by Gay Byrne.

It’s fair to say that everyone on the show as well as those at home loved all the throwbacks even if they just cemented how feckin’ mad Ireland is as a nation…

A simpler time indeed.
