Whatsapp Has Announced A Major New Update That Will Restrict How You Send Messages

James Fenton

Messages spreading from one Whatsapp group to another could soon be a thing of the past after the messaging app announced a new update yesterday.

According to Sky News, the Facebook-owned company will restrict the number of times a message can be forwarded on to five in a bid to combat the spread of fake news. Previously, the limit was set at 20 times.

The update was introduced in India last summer after the spreading of rumours reportedly led to several murders in the country. Whatsapp’s Victoria Grand said that the company wants to fight “misinformation and rumours”.

Of course, forwarding a message on just five times can still lead to trouble and there’s always the sneaky screenshot. However, any move to ensure users’ safety should be welcomed.
