‘Fair City’ Has Hit Back At An Online Petition Which Criticises The Soap

James Fenton

This story has got legs.

The other day, we told you that a viewer of Ireland’s longest-running soap Fair City had started an online petition because he was sick of watching a storyline which he felt had been going on too long.

While we admit we’re not exactly privy to the goings-on in Carrigstown, what we gather is that plot in question involves a character called Ciaran who has kept a girl called Katy hostage since last May. That’s coming up to a year now so we can kind of understand the frustration, to be fair.

The petition has so far amassed 7,165 after an in spread like wildfire across social media.

Well, it seems that the soap has fired back. According to RTE, a spokesperson said:

“Drama, by its nature, deals with a wide variety of topics, from the whimsical to the more sobering.”

“While this particular story is taking time to unfold, it allows us to explore different facets of the drama and how it impacts each of the characters involved from Katy herself, to Ciaran and the family and friends left behind.”

This story is going to run and run, folks. (Where have we heard that before?)

We’ll keep you posted.
