If you've seen the name Bradley Wiggins trending today, it's not for any of his cycling achievements but rather a fairly unfathomable display of ignorance.
A five-time Olympic gold medalist, you'd think Bradley Wiggins would have enough intelligence to know that Carrick-On-Suir isn't part of the UK and to claim otherwise in front of the town's most famous son almost beggars belief.
It turns out Wiggins is that ignorant after he managed to insult not only legendary Irish cyclist Sean Kelly but the Irish nation as a whole while analysing Sam Bennett's success in the Tour de France yesterday. Appearing on Eurosport's The Breakaway alongside Bennett's fellow Carrick-On-Suir man Kelly, Wiggins decided to claim Bennett as British by saying: "We can almost consider him British. I know that you lot won’t like that, will you?", before glancing over to a decidedly bemused-looked Kelly.
He went on: "I’ve known Sam quite a few years in terms of racing, although I don’t know him personally," before Kelly, seemingly seething on the inside said: "You’re not going to claim him" while attempting to laugh off Wiggins' stupidity.
The Belgium-born Wiggins wasn't finished there though as he continued: "We spoke to him at the Vuelta last year when he came on our show, and at least we can understand what he’s saying. We can’t really understand what you’re saying Sean, can we?”
At which point Kelly pretty much has no words left other than to scoff and give a shrug of the shoulders. Like Katie Taylor, Paul Mescal and countless others, Bennett is now the victim of BCIS (British Claiming Irish Success) Syndrome and you can watch the cringey moment for yourself below...
