WATCH: Irish cyclist Sam Bennett overcome with emotion after winning Tour de France stage 10

Cyclist Sam Bennett was overcome with emotion in a TV interview after winning stage 10 of the Tour de France this afternoon.

After becoming only the sixth Irishman to win a stage of the Tour de France, Carrick-on-Suir man Sam Bennett couldn’t hold back the tears when interviewed on TV afterwards.

Cool and composed at the beginning of the interview, the 29-year-old stated that he thought he’d be in floods of tears but that he was just “kind of in shock”. It wasn’t long before his emotions did kick in and it makes for a very raw and honest watch as Bennett paid tribute to his wife and everyone else that has helped him on his journey.

Shay Elliott, Seán Kelly, Stephen Roche, Martin Earley and Dan Martin are the only Irishmen to have previously done what Bennett did today. Bennett said “You dream of it, you never think it’ll happen. It did and, I don’t know, it took a while for it to hit me.”
