WATCH: Old footage of a furious Roy Keane losing a quiz goes viral

James Fenton

If you’re having a Zoom quiz this weekend, it might be a bad idea to invite Roy Keane if this footage of him losing a quiz back in the day is anything to go by.

The words ‘Roy Keane’ and ‘winning mentality’ have been placed together so often at this stage that it’s practically boring. However, this old clip of the Corkman taking part in a quiz during his Manchester United days just proves that his relentless will to win wasn’t just limited to the football pitch.

Footage from a documentary called Manchester United: Beyond the Promised Land was uploaded to YouTube by Classic Man Utd Videos and Clips yesterday and it’s drawn plenty of attention on social media this afternoon. The film followed United’s progress through the 1999/2000 when they were champions of England and Europe and fronted by the influential leadership of both manager Alex Ferguson and captain Roy Keane.

As we know, the two men would later fall out and this clip might just show the early signs of tension in their relationship. Fergie, in a team with his coaching staff, appears to be soaring to victory during a team quiz but Roy is not the least bit happy. Accusing the quizmaster of changing the questions, Keano can be seen shouting across the room, much to the amusement and (bemusement) of his own quiz team, which included the likes of Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs and David Beckham.

Proving that his anger wasn’t short-lived, Roy can be seen leaving the room at the end of the quiz, still bemoaning what went on and calling the winning team “cheaters”.

If anything, it’s a fascinating insight into the competitive edge that Keano, and that United team as a whole, possessed. You can have a look at the clip for yourself below…
