It’s summer 1998. The Good Friday Agreement has just been endorsed, Louis Walsh is about to release Westlife onto an unsuspecting public and Colin Farrell was appearing on our TV screens as a handsome French footballer.
It’s widely acknowledged that the Castleknock actor got his big break on BBC drama Ballykissangel but if you stretch your memory back far enough you might remember Farrell appearing in the intro to RTÉ’s coverage of the 1998 World Cup in France.
A clip has emerged in the past couple of days which features the fresh-faced 21-year-old posing as one of the tournament’s stars as dramatic footage of players and fans takes place around him.
The throwback was posted to Twitter by @KillianM2, who btw is a great follow for nostalgic TV clips, and you can check it out in full below.
The opening titles of RTE's World Cup 98 coverage was pretty forgettable, but it did feature a young jobbing actor at the time.
Amazingly, I couldn't find anything at all about this online given the internets love for a bit of 'before they were famous'. pic.twitter.com/Xl4Ix1qr9v— KM2 TV Archive (@KillianM2) June 12, 2019
