WATCH: The first trailer for incredibly powerful new Irish movie Herself

Rory Cashin

Definitely in the running for the best Irish movie of 2020.

Even if this was a normal cinema year and we were getting huge new movies each and every week in our packed cinemas, we’d still be saying that Herself is in the running for the best Irish movie of 2021. The full review for the movie will be coming to Lovin very soon, but for now all we will say is go see it when it comes out.

With that in mind, Element Pictures have released the trailer for the movie, in which young mother Sandra (Clare Dunne, who also co-wrote the screenplay) is attempting to leave her abusive husband and find somewhere safe for her and her two young daughters to live. However, when up against the difficult housing system in Ireland, Sandra is forced to make some unique decisions.

Directed by Phyllida Lloyd (Mamma Mia), and co-starring Harriet Walter (Killing Eve), Cathy Belton (Red Rock), Ian Llyod Anderson (Love/Hate) and Conleth Hill (Game Of Thrones), the movie tackles some very heavy topics such as domestic abuse, victim blaming and the Irish housing system.

While that all sounds very heavy, it still manages to be hugely entertaining and a bit of an emotional rollercoaster, without devolving into what we sometimes refer to as “misery porn”.

Herself arrives in Irish cinemas soon, and you can check out the trailer right here:
