We knew there was a solid reason why we LOVE gin – apart from the fact that it’s an easy-to-drink delight that has revolutionised Dublin’s cocktail scene.
And now, our fellow gin guzzlers, we’ve discovered a new fact about the spirit that will bring pure, unbridled joy to your life.
Research published in the Food & Nature journal from a study by the University of Sigulda in Latvia has revealed that gin could actually be helping you to lose weight.
Seriously.
Scientists found that drinking a shot of gin produces ‘after burn’ effect that speeds up your metabolism and boosts your body’s calorie-burning potential for up to an hour after consumption.
The Latvian scientists gave two groups of mice the equivalent of a shot’s worth of either water or gin, before measuring their calorie-burning potential.
While the mice who drank water experienced no major uplift in their metabolism, the other group of lucky gin-drinkers saw a 17% increase in their metabolic rate.
Study author Professor Thisa Lye said: ‘Consumption of gin resulted in a marked increase in metabolic rate, which indicates the spirit may have a slimming effect on the body.’
Although further tests are needed on humans to confirm the results, we’ll happily take this new piece of information with us to the bar.
Three cheers for gin!
