President Michael D. Higgins has confirmed that his new dog is called Misneach, which is the Irish word for ‘courage.’

The President has been pictured in recent days walking with his long-time companion Bród along with a new canine friend, also a Bermese Mountain Dog. A spokesperson for the Áras has confirmed that the five-month-old puppy is called Misneach, meaning courage, and this name was chosen ‘due to the time we are in.’

Back in September, tributes poured in after President Higgins announced the death of his previous dog Síoda. Misneach already looks very happy to have joined the clan and Bród is no doubt delighted to welcome him.

Keep an eye out for the whole family the next time you’re able to visit the Phoenix Park.
