The world’s most popular baby name for girls has been revealed, and it’s actually lovely.
Sofia, or Sophia, topped polls across the board, proving popular in several different languages.
It was number one in the likes of Italy, Slovakia, Mexico, Estonia, Chile and Russia – and those are just the countries which provide baby name data.
Naming expert Laura Wattenberg shared the stats on the Baby Name Wizard blog, commenting on how fashionable the name is.
“I can’t say definitively that Sofia is the world’s most common girl’s name in terms of number of babies born […] but it is certainly the most widely popular,” she said.
Sophia has surpassed even Maria/Mary, indicating that more people could be starting to move away from religious names or naming children after grandparents.
