Cutting the cake while your dearest mother takes a photograph is just not going to be as cute anymore as it used to be.

These wedding experts have come out and told us the real disturbing reason why couples cut the cake at the reception of their wedding.

According to Aleisha McCormack, a wedding specialist and founder of website Bridechilla says that the cutting of a cake is meant to symbolise the breaking of the bride's hymen on her wedding night.

Explaining on her Mamamia podcast, she said that: “This is a very old school tradition, a lot of us don’t think about the connection between the vagina and the cake.

“To be honest, I love eating cake and I’ll have any excuse and I don’t see it as a salute to the patriarchy."
