14 counties hit with weather warnings as wind and rain set to batter Ireland on Sunday

James Fenton

Met Éireann has issued weather warnings to a total of 14 counties as much of Ireland braces itself for a day of strong winds and heavy rain on Sunday.

Firstly, a status yellow wind warning is in place for Donegal, Mayo and Sligo which is valid from 6am until 9pm on Sunday. In this part of the country, ‘mean wind speeds of 50 to 65 km/h and gusts of 90 to 100 km/h’ are expected.

Further south, a similar status yellow wind warning has been issued for Galway, Clare, and Kerry. It’s valid from 12 noon until 10pm on Sunday and is also expected to bring speeds of 50 to 65 km/h and gusts of 90 to 100 km.

Meanwhile, a status yellow rainfall warning is in place for Kildare, Laois, Longford, Wicklow, Offaly, Westmeath, Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo. It’s valid from 7am until 11pm on Sunday with ‘heavy and persistent rainfall on Sunday with totals of 25 to 40mm expected.’

People in these areas are warned that this ‘may result in some rivers flooding as well as surface flooding.’ We already told you that Sunday is expected to be a ‘duvet day’ and these warnings only solidify that theory.
