A Shocking Amount Of Irish Teens Are Using Sunbeds

James Fenton

The number of Irish teenagers using sunbeds has risen since a ban on their use by under 18s was introduced in 2014.

According to the Irish Times , a survey has revealed that the percentage of teens using sunbeds has risen from 7.4% to 8.8% since the new legislation was introduced.

The research was led by Dr. Dermot McKenna, a dermatologist at Sligo University Hospital. 616 secondary students in Dublin and Sligo were questioned on their use of sunbeds from November 2016 to February 2017.

The previous study was carried out at the same schools before the ban came into place.

Dr. Stephanie Menzies was part of the research team and was disappointed with the results. She explained:

“There has certainly not been any improvement since the legislation was introduced and the numbers are clearly higher in Dublin.”
