HSE Investigating Priest At Centre Of Popular Netflix Documentary

James Fenton

The HSE has confirmed it is investigating the work of Father Joseph Maskell in Ireland.

The American priest’s name has become well-known around the world thanks to recently released Netflix documentary The Keepers.

The show centres on alleged abuse inflicted by Maskell on a number of different victims as well as the murder of Sister Cathy Cesnik who is said to have known about Maskell’s crimes.

Maskell fled to Wexford in 1994 when some of the allegations emerged. The HSE told the Irish Times that it had begun reviewing the work of Maskell and “any concerns” arising from his employment as a psychologist in a “psycho-education initiative” by the South Eastern Health Board in Wexford from April 11th, 1995 to November 7th, 1995.

The Keepers has gained huge popularity among Netflix audiences since its release a few weeks back. It’s said that a number of victims have come forward since watching the documentary.
