Katie Taylor has long been an Irish sporting legend but last night she further staked a claim for being our best ever by winning the WBA Women’s Lightweight World Title in Cardiff.
She overcame Anahi Esther Sanchez and it was without doubt the greatest achievement of her fledgling pro career and her greatest night since winning Olympic gold at London 2012.
Here’s how people reacted to Katie’s historic win.
President Higgins led the congratulations
“May I offer my sincere congratulations to Katie Taylor on her first world title in professional boxing.”
— President of Ireland (@PresidentIRL) October 28, 2017
In a statement, he wrote:
“May I offer my sincere congratulations to Katie Taylor on her first world title in professional boxing.
This success, which follows her five world amateur titles and her Olympic gold medal, is a testament to Katie’s talent, power and skills as well as an outstanding determination and dedication to her profession.
On behalf of the people of Ireland I send her my congratulations on winning this world title.”
