Everyone from the Irish Embassy to Dustin the Turkey had big love for the CNN reporter hailing from Kerry.
Back in November 2020, approximately seventeen months ago in lockdown time, when all of Ireland was glued to American TV during the election results, the country confessed their new-found love for CNN reporter John King, who effortlessly and intelligently held our hands through the confusing, messy world of electoral colleges and postal ballots and the likes.
Jump forward to Wednesday night, and Ireland was once again glued to the events in the States, when the Capitol Building in Washington DC was over-run by Trump supporters who believed the election results were rigged, and rushed the government building just as President Elect Joe Biden was about to confirmed to be the winner of the election.
However, there was another reason why Irish viewers were so invested in the proceedings, and that was down to one of the CNN reporters being Donie O’Sullivan, who hails from Kerry, and has been covering US political events since the beginning of the 2016 Presidential elections.
Quickly, Ireland denounced John King as our CNN idol, replaced by someone closer to home, and even John King himself couldn’t argue with it:
Agreed John. But Irish hearts are large. There's room enough for both of you.

If you haven’t yet seen some of Donie’s coverage of the events in Washington, you can check it out right here, asking some of the protestors if they were proud of their actions as they began to leave the government buildings:
As Trump supporters left the US Capitol yesterday, we asked them if they were proud of what had happened https://t.co/VTb5USbSY5 pic.twitter.com/HHbedYDPNI

Very quickly, every variation of “Donie”, “Donie O Sullivan, “Donie CNN Ireland”, whatever you could think of, they all started to trend on Irish and worldwide Twitter, as viewers immediately became very invested in the safety of our newest national treasure.
Here are just some of the tweets last night following his reports at the Capitol Building:
Overwhelmed by all the love from Ireland tonight. ☘️ ❤️ https://t.co/rKCksNFxkk

The Poultry Party is pleased to confirm we are in advanced talks with @donie about joining the party as our American Ambassador. A big step for us bringing a committed culchie into senior party ranks but we believe now is the hour to reach out to our country cousins. #donie pic.twitter.com/L9r7rKccGR
