Controversial Oscar hopeful Detainment is expected to be shown on RTÉ in the coming weeks, it was revealed on Claire Byrne Live last night.

The Irish movie, which has been nominated in the Live Action Short category, is based around transcripts of police interviews with Jon Venables and Robert Thompson, who were convicted of murdering two-year-old James Bulger in Liverpool in 1993.

Appearing on the RTÉ current affairs programme last night, director Vincent Lambe said that he hadn’t consulted the victims family before making the movie. The film has gained worldwide attention and an online petition to have it banned has reached over 100,000 signatures.

During the interview with Lambe, presenter Claire Byrne said that while the film is not scheduled to be shown in UK cinemas, it will be shown on RTÉ in the coming weeks. Confirmation of Detainment‘s Oscar nomination was confirmed earlier today.
