The HSE has issued an update on how hospitals are coping with increased numbers as flu season descends upon Ireland.
The figures show that 3,000 patients attended emergency departments on New Year’s Day, of which 602 were admitted to hospital for further treatment.
The update adds that hospitals are expected to get busier in the coming weeks as flu levels rise.
